ASPCA Government Relations Internship
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) is our nation’s first humane organization and one of the largest nonprofit animal welfare organizations in the world. The ASPCA provides local and national leadership in caring for pets and pet parents, providing positive outcomes for at-risk animals, and serving victims of animal cruelty.The ASPCA’s Government Relations Department works to help enact meaningful legal protections for animals at the state and federal levels. We lobby for bills that strengthen animal protection and prevent cruelty; we work to ensure that strong regulations are issued by agencies to implement new policies; we offer advocacy training and support for citizens who wish to engage in policy change; and we work on ballot campaigns to advance protections when a legislative solution is unavailable.Internship Program:The ASPCA seeks dedicated and passionate Government Relations interns to, under direct supervision, provide assistance on key projects necessary to the furtherance of our goals and will become familiar with the role that the Department plays in legislative and policy work. These are unpaid positions and are based out of our Washington D.C. office.
Interns will be given opportunities to:
• Help to mobilize the ASPCA Advocacy Brigade membership on key initiatives
• Aid in tracking the existence and movement of administrative regulations and laws pertaining to animals;
• Draft letters and other documents and conduct legal and issue research to assist regulatory, federal and state efforts;
• Attend Capitol Hill events, such as hearings and briefings; attend and/or help organize coalition meetings and local events;
• Respond to information requests from ASPCA constituents;
• Serve as office liaison for traveling and remote staff members;
• Attend strategy and staff meetings;
• Assist with miscellaneous office tasks and projects as needed.This internship is structured as a learning or work study program and can be the basis for credit at the undergraduate or graduate school level. Students will be mentored by professional lobbyists and attorneys.
The duration of each internship position is flexible and will be determined on case-by-case basis. Generally, the position should be:
• Fall Semester: Between August 15th and December 31st
• Spring Semester: Between January 2nd and May 30th
• Summer: Between May 15th and August 30th
• 10–16 weeks, 20–40 hrs/wk preferred
• At the will and sole discretion of the ASPCAEligibility:Students currently enrolled in undergraduate, graduate, veterinary or law study, who have an interest in pursuing a career working in animal welfare, public policy, political science, law, or other relevant field. Recent graduates may also be considered.
Internship pay is $10/hour if not receiving academic credit for the internship.
Course credit/work study credit is encouraged and can be arranged if eligible. The intern is responsible for arranging this with the school. Credit hours can be awarded for completion of the full internship program.
Housing is not available and is the responsibility of the Intern.

Additional Information:All Interns will be required to sign our Work Study/Internship Agreement and review our Internship Handbook by the official start date of the engagement.
